# Botulinum toxin injections

Botulinum toxin is a medicine injected into certain muscles of the face. It reduces their contraction. It treats expression lines: forehead lines, glabellar lines (between the eyebrows, known as “frown lines”) and crow’s feet. It is intended for people who are bothered by these lines, for prevention or correction.

## How the procedure unfolds

## In practice

-   In consultation, I analyse your request and the structure of your face.
-   I examine the skin, the mobility of the muscles and the position of the eyebrows.
-   I collect information about your state of health, your treatments and your medical history.
-   We take photographs for your medical record.
-   I give you information about the product, its effects and its limits.
-   I give you an estimate.

The injections can be done during the second consultation.

During

## The session

The session takes place at the practice. It does not require anaesthesia. An anaesthetic cream can be applied before the session if you wish.

The skin is disinfected. I make several injection points with a very fine needle into the targeted muscles.

The session generally lasts fifteen to thirty minutes. You leave immediately afterwards.

After

## Aftercare

The aftercare is most often simple.

-   A small red spot or slight swelling may appear at each injection point. They generally disappear within a few hours.
-   A small bruise is possible.
-   A mild headache may occur during the first days.

You can resume your usual activities the same day. Avoid massaging the treated area, lying down and doing sport in the following hours.

The result is assessed at two or three weeks. A touch-up may be offered at that time if necessary. I see you again for a follow-up consultation.

## Duration of the effect

The effect generally appears after a few days. It is most often complete after two to three weeks. The effect is temporary: it generally lasts several months, then the muscles regain their mobility. The sessions can be repeated to maintain the result. A minimum interval between two sessions is respected.

## What to do to optimize the result?

-   Do not massage or rub the injected areas on the day of the session.
-   Avoid sport, sauna and heat for the following twenty-four hours.
-   Protect the skin from the sun.
-   Moisturise the skin.
-   Stop smoking: tobacco accelerates skin ageing.
-   Respect the rhythm of sessions that we define together.

## Social security coverage

Botulinum toxin injections for aesthetic purposes are not covered by social security. They remain at your expense.

## My advice

-   ### Hydrate yourself and your skin
    
    Drink enough water and unsweetened drinks regularly. Apply a moisturizer to the skin once or twice a day after cleansing.
    
-   ### Protect yourself from the sun
    
    Avoid prolonged direct exposure, cover up and regularly apply total sunscreen protection (UVA / UVB) factor 50 to exposed areas.
    
-   ### You should not smoke
    
    or you should stop smoking as soon as possible. If needed, ask for help to your doctor or a tobacco addiction specialist, there are many methods available to help you in this difficult process.
